Almost Spring 2009

Hi, family, friends and fans.

As much fun as it is to get mail that's not just a pile of junk, I looked at the time and money costs of the mailing as our fan base has grown and decided to move online with our news.  I'll use the Art of Possibility blog, our press page and our FaceBook fan page to announce news and events. We'll tweet with our updates.  Subscribe to everything!  People will say, "wow, you sure are in the know" once they get past your phenomenal good looks to the content of your soul, that is.

Encouraging a World of Change

22 years ago an organization to encourage social change began offering fellowships to help social entrepreneurs with good ideas manifest those ideas into real world solutions. This year Echoing Green chose Art of Possibility for the semifinals of its 2009 fellowship. The 300 semifinalists went through a rigorous Phase 2 application and will be winnowed to 30 finalists. Wish us luck!

C'mon, bebe, lighthouse my fire

Here's a first for ya: this year's Insights exhibition, a national juried fine art show by blind and low vision artists will, for the first time in its 20-year history, have a blind juror: me. To accommodate my diminished visual perception the organizer, Lighthouse for the Blind & Visually Impaired, added a 50-word "statement of intent" to the application process so my fellow jurors and I will have an indication of what each artist hopes to communicate through his/her work.

This is a great example of how accommodation benefits everyone, as the other jurors will gain insight from that information and the artists will have to truly focus on articulating the concept of what they're trying to accomplish through their work.

On the other hand, now when disgruntled artists grumble, "Rejection!?  Whu ... ? My work is genius! The juror must be blind!" they'll be right.
